Rethinking biodiversity patterns and processes in stream ecosystems

چکیده
A major goal of community ecology is understanding the processes responsible for generating biodiversity patterns along spatial and environmental gradients. In stream ecosystems, system-specific conceptual frameworks have dominated research describing change longitudinal gradients river networks. However, support these has been mixed, mainly applicable to specific ecosystems biomes, placed less emphasis on general mechanisms driving patterns. Rethinking in with a focus overarching common across will provide more holistic why vary this study, we apply theory ecological communities (TEC) framework explicitly core structuring communities: dispersal, speciation, niche selection, drift. Using unique case study from high-elevation networks connected lakes streams, sampled invertebrate Sierra Nevada, California, USA test established compared them TEC framework. Local diversity increased β-diversity decreased moving downstream headwaters, consistent continuum concept small but mighty mountain biodiversity. was also structured by distance below upstream lakes, where serial discontinuity concept. Despite some predicted frameworks, no single fully supported, suggesting “context dependence.” By framing our results under TEC, found that species local highest environmentally favorable sites. sites sizes, countering effects Moreover, higher headwaters influenced dispersal harsh spatially isolated exhibit variation. Taken together suggest combining provides powerful approach inferring path toward generalization ecosystems.

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
متن کاملBiodiversity and ecosystems
Biologists devised the word biodiversity to allow us to talk about the totality of life on Earth, encompassing everything from the level of DNA and genes, through to individuals, species, and whole ecosystems. Reducing global biodiversity loss in the face of unprecedented population extirpation and species extinction has become a fundamental goal for conservation, and the subject of an array of...
متن کاملWatershed-Scale Comparisons of Algal Biodiversity in High-Quality Proximate Hawaiian Stream Ecosystems!
The stream macroalgal floras of two proximate, high-quality stream valleys (Hanakapl'ai and Limahuli) located on the northern quadrant of the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i were inventoried and compared on a watershed scale, providing interesting insight into Hawai'i's potential taxonomic diversity and the influential role played by physical factors in shaping community characteristics. A total of 2...
متن کاملLandscape moderation of biodiversity patterns and processes - eight hypotheses.
Understanding how landscape characteristics affect biodiversity patterns and ecological processes at local and landscape scales is critical for mitigating effects of global environmental change. In this review, we use knowledge gained from human-modified landscapes to suggest eight hypotheses, which we hope will encourage more systematic research on the role of landscape composition and configu...
